What price does Public use as the "starting point" for my daily return?
Stocks: the previous day's 4:00 PM ET closing price
Crypto: midnight in your local time zone
This reference price is the same whether your toggle is on or off. The toggle only changes what you see on the chart, not how your return is calculated.
So what does the toggle actually change, if not my return? Two things:
How much of the trading day your chart displays
Whether the current price shown is a regular-hours price only, or includes extended-hours/24/5 price updates
Why does my portfolio show one "1D" return when I hold both stocks and crypto? Because stocks and crypto measure their trading day differently — stocks from the prior 4:00 PM close, crypto from midnight — your portfolio's 1-day return blends both starting points. This isn't an error; it just reflects the fact that "one day" means slightly different windows for each asset class. Your individual position returns always add up to your total portfolio return, since they all use the same reference prices.
Does my margin change based on the toggle? No. Margin requirements are always calculated using real-time prices, regardless of your toggle setting. Turning extended-hours viewing on or off has no effect on your margin.
Public does not process margin calls in extended and 24/5 session.
