What is the minimum amount required for margin investing?

To purchase a security on margin, FINRA requires that you have at least $2,000 or $2,000 in marginable securities in your brokerage account. Marginable securities include most stocks, ETFs, and bonds. This is called the margin minimum. Balances in your High Yield Cash Account, Treasury Account, Crypto, or Bond Account will not count towards the $2,000 minimum requirement.

If you’re flagged as a pattern day trader, you must maintain $25,000 in marginable assets in your margin account before you can continue day trading. If you drop below $25,000, you will be assessed with an equity maintenance call.

To access margin investing, you must apply and meet Public’s eligibility and appropriateness requirements, including the $2,000 regulatory minimum.

Please reach out to us at support@public.com, or via the in-app chat function if you have any questions.
