How can I sell a bond in my Bond Account? Is there a minimum sale amount?
Updated this week

You can place a sell order at any time to withdraw funds from your Bond Account. There is not a minimum withdrawal amount.

To sell from your Bond Account:

  • Tap on Sell at the bottom of your Bond Account portfolio

  • Enter the amount desired or tap “Sell All”

  • Tap Next

  • Tap Confirm

When placing a sell order in your bond account, Public will first use the available cash to fulfill the sell amount requested. If there is not enough cash available for the amount of the sell order, Public will sell the bonds in your portfolio in increments of $100 par value, according to the following Sell Order Methodology:

Public will attempt to fulfill the entire withdrawal by using the cash balance in your Bond Account. If you attempt to withdraw an amount greater than the cash balance, Public will sell bonds to raise sufficient funds. The first bond in your Bond Account that will be sold will be the bond you hold in the highest par value amount. If more than one bond in the Bond Account falls into that category, Public Investing will sell the bond in that category with the lowest rating. If more than one bond in that category has the same rating, then Public Investing will sell the bond with the lowest rating and the lowest yield. Once the first $100 par value bond is identified to sell using this Sell Order Methodology, Public Investing will identify the next $100 par value amount using the same logic, until your withdrawal amount is satisfied.

Bonds in the Bond Account can only be sold in minimum $100 par value increments. Any amount of cash can be transferred out of your Bond Account. If a request to sell bonds and transfer money out of your account is received by Public Investing, Public Investing will first transfer any cash out of the Bond Account to the destination account, then sell bonds according to the Sell Order Methodology. This process will continue until enough proceeds have been generated to satisfy the sale amount. This may result in a cash balance in the Bond Account. The Sell Order Methodology is subject to change at any time.

In your bond account, you cannot select a specific bond to sell or change the allocation within the account.

Once sold, the funds will need to settle and the proceeds will be transferred back to your Public Brokerage account for reinvestment or withdrawal.
