What tax documents will I receive from Public?

Updated today

If you had a taxable event during the calendar year (for example, you sold stock, received dividends or interest, made distributions from an IRA, etc.,) you will receive a 1099 tax document from Apex Clearing, our clearing firm, which you can access via the Public app.

Just a heads-up: if the total of funds received from your dividends or interest do not exceed $10, and you did not sell stock during the tax year, you will not receive a brokerage tax document.

You will receive an email from our clearing firm, Apex Clearing, when your 1099 forms are ready. All tax documents, including 1099 forms and crypto tax statements, will also be made available in the app. Please note that tax forms will be made available to Public members by mid-February.

If you had a taxable event in your crypto account, (i.e, you sold crypto), you will receive Form 1099-DA. This is a new IRS tax form used to report sales/ dispositions/ exchanges of cryptocurrency. Please note, for the 2025 tax year, brokers are not required to report cost basis; only gross proceeds are reportable.

For residents of Puerto Rico: Apex Clearing produces 480.6A, the "Informative Return - Income Not Subject (Not Subject) to Withholding" form, which is available the end of February.

While Public does not offer tax advice, we’re always happy to help answer general questions via the app's Chat or via email at support@public.com.

None of the entities named in this article provide legal, tax, or accounting advice. You should consult your legal, tax, or financial advisors before making any financial decisions.
